Do Not Stifle the Spirit: Conversations with Jacques Dupuis

Do Not Stifle the Spirit: Conversations with Jacques Dupuis, is essentially a series of interviews with his friend and colleague Gerard O’Connell, now an associate editor and Vatican correspondent for America magazine.  Dupuis lived from 1923 to 2004. His magnum opus, “Toward a Christian Theology of Religious Pluralism” (Orbis Books, 1997) came to be investigated by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which contended that the book had “ambiguities.”  The conversations began in 2002 and are the subject of Chapters 1 and 2. They were suspended for a time and resumed in 2004 and resulted in Chapter 3.  The subject of the interviews is about Dupuis’s life and faith. The Preface by Fr. Gerald O’Collins, SJ and Introduction by the author are worth the price of the book.  Available for $30.00 from Orbis Books, P.O. Box 302, Maryknoll, NY 10545. Tel: (800) 258-5838.
