Father Esequiel Sanchez, Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines Illinois, was one of 103 miraculous survivors of an Aeromexico plane crash outside Durango, Mexico on July 31, 2018. Sanchez suffered multiple fractures to his arm requiring surgery and insertion of a metal plate, to which he commented: “I’ll be the bionic priest.”
During a telephone interview prior to undergoing surgery, Father Sanchez shared his eye-witness account of the crash and rescue of all passengers. He commended the airline’s crew for their efforts in the safe evacuation of all onboard the aircraft.
After learning that Father Sanchez was safe and there was no loss of life when the flight crashed, hundreds of worshipers gathered at the Shrine in Des Plaines to offer prayers and celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving. A large contingency of Parishioners gathered again on Saturday, August 4, 2018, to welcome Father Sanchez home from his ordeal.
