The Vatican’s Congregation of the Causes of the Saints officially declared Father Stanley Rother, a priest of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, who was murdered in Guatemala in 1981, a martyr. He is the first American to be recognized a martyr by the Vatican.

A report by National Catholic Reporter writer, Joshua McElwee (Dec. 2, 2016), noted that the action by the Congregation took place Friday. The report goes on to note that Pope Francis expected to beatify Fr. Rother in the coming weeks.

In 2015 Our Sunday Visitor published a biography of Fr. Rother by Maria Ruiz Scaperlanda, tilted “The Shepherd Who Did Not Run.” Click here –  for an annotated review of the volume and more information on Fr. Rother’s life and ministry.
