A Vatican delegation is in Pyeongchang, South Korea to participate in the opening of the XXIII Winter Olympics on Friday, February 9, 2018. Earlier this week the delegation, lead by Monsignor Melchor Sanchez de Toca, under-secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture, also attended a key Olympic strategic meeting as observers. The XXIII Winter Games marks the first time the Olympic Committee has extended a formal invitation to the Holy See to attend.
Monsignor Sanchez de Toca will present Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, and Korean athletes with t-shirts stamped “Vatican Athletics.” The shirts are a goodwill gesture to emphasize the Vatican’s strong support of sports as a means to promote international peace.
