Michael O’Loughlin, national correspondent for America magazine wrote an essay summarizing findings of the recently released National Diocesan Survey: Salary and benefits for Priests and Lay Personnel – 2017. The survey, commissioned by the National Association of Church Personnel Administrators and the National Federation of Priests’ Councils, was conducted by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate in the winter of 2017.
For diocesan priests the average salary in 2017 is $29,619, which compares to the average salary in 2013 of $24, 236.
Total taxable income for the same period is $45,593 and $42,896 respectively. Total taxable income includes all items generally considered taxable income and support, e.g. allowances, Mass stipends, stole fees, housing, and food support as a well as salary.
