Following the Consistory on June 29, and his elevation to Cardinal in the Catholic faith, the Pope’s Almoner, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, invited the needy to a celebration meal at the Vatican. Approximately 260 people, including the new Cardinal’s family members, were served by volunteers from the Office of Papal Charities, Permanent Deacons and Sisters of Mother Teresa who distribute meals to the impoverished around Roman stations.
The surprise guest (even to Cardinal Krajewski) was Pope Francis who arrived around 6:30 pm. Most guests thought the Holy Father was just dropping in for a quick “hello,” but he remained for dinner and visited with the other guests, many of them refugees, who shared their stories of pain, but also hope for the future. According to news sources, Francis was visibly moved to hear that many homeless people help the volunteers help others like themselves.
Of course, Cardinal Krajewski is no stranger to feeding the needy….he hosts a daily meal for the homeless at his apartment in the Vatican which is referred to as “the best pasta in all of Rome.”
