The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, and the World Council of Churches, are jointly encouraging all faiths worldwide to join a day of prayer and fasting for peace in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday, February 23, 2018. Both South Sudan and the DRC have been troubled with violence, conflict and unrest over an extended period of time, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life, as well as widespread famine and starvation.
The February 23 day of prayer is the second pontifical call for prayer on behalf of South Sudan and the DRC. The first one occurred on November 17, 2017. Friday’s prayer initiative also falls during the Lenten Season, a time of fasting, conversion and prayer for Catholics and other Christian faiths.
