Archbishop John Wester of Santa Fe, New Mexico announced at a news conference on November 29, 2018, that the Archdiocese would file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Reorganization. Wester stated that seeking protection under bankruptcy laws was an equitable way for the Archdiocese to meet its responsibility to sexual abuse victims.
Wester’s announcement came the day after New Mexico’s Attorney General executed a search warrant on the chancery office in Albuquerque seeking files related to Marvin Archuleta and Sabine Griego both of whom were accused of sexually abusing minors. Griego was laicized in 2005 after allegedly abusing at least thirty-two children. Wester also confirmed during the press session that the Archdiocese’s staff had worked cooperatively with the Attorney General’s agents and provided documents related to the two former priests.
